Sakshi Verkot: Legacy of Resilience
Sakshi Verkot's life was a testament to resilience and joy, even in the face of a relentless battle against a deadly disease. At the tender age of 16, Sakshi succumbed to desmoplastic small, round cell tumors (DSRCT), a rare and aggressive form of cancer that originates in the body's connective tissue.
Throughout her cancer journey, Sakshi displayed an incorrigible spirit. Despite the physical toll of her illness, she found moments to mimic, mime, and bring laughter to those around her. Her mother, Binu Sivan, reflects on the unexpected comfort visitors found in Sakshi's presence, realizing that her impact extended far beyond her years.
The journey began at the age of 14 when Sakshi exhibited symptoms, including a lump on her forehead and a recurring hip sprain. Amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, hospital visits became a routine, leading to a comprehensive diagnosis by a neurologist. DSRCT, identified as a distinct condition in 1989, presented Sakshi with a daunting seven percent chance of survival.
The subsequent treatment involved a rigorous chemotherapy protocol, known to be one of the most challenging globally. Sakshi faced the hardships of neutropenic fever after each session, a critical condition resulting from lowered immunity. From January to November 2021, she underwent chemotherapy, witnessing a reduction in the cancer's progression.
Optimism grew within Sakshi's family as her resilience seemed to be prevailing. However, a crucial turning point arrived with the need for Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) surgery. This highly specialized procedure involved opening the abdomen, removing cancerous tissue, and administering a heated chemotherapy wash.
The months leading to November 2021 were filled with hope, but the complexity of Sakshi's condition took a toll. The HIPEC surgery marked a critical phase, and despite initial positive signs, the battle took an unfortunate turn. Sakshi's journey ended in November 2021, leaving a void but also a legacy of inspiration and kindness.
Binu Sivan, reflecting on her daughter's impact, acknowledges the profound influence Sakshi had on those around her. The outpouring of stories from people who experienced Sakshi's kindness and love highlighted the depth of her character.
Sakshi's story sheds light on the challenges faced by those battling rare diseases, emphasizing the need for awareness, research, and support. As her family navigates life without her physical presence, Sakshi's spirit lives on, leaving behind a legacy that transcends the limitations of time.
In remembrance of Sakshi Verkot, her family and loved ones cherish the moments of joy, laughter, and love she shared, ensuring that her vibrant spirit continues to inspire others facing adversity. Sakshi's zest for life remains an enduring beacon of strength, reminding us all to embrace each moment with resilience and joy.
