One killed, 19 injured in Dubai after truck crashes into workers' bus

Two days after the incident, police said a workers' bus collided with a truck on Al Yalayis Street in Dubai, killing one person and injuring 19 others.

The accident happened near Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Bridge, heading to Emirates Road. Preliminary investigations revealed that a malfunction somewhere on the bus had caused it to stop suddenly in the middle of the road just before it was struck from behind by a truck.

The driver of the truck lost focus and did not maintain an appropriate distance, Dubai Police said.

Injuries and Emergency Response

The injured included:

The critically injured eight
Two who sustained moderate injuries
Nine who suffered minor injuries
All the injured were conveyed to Hospital.

Brigadier Jumaa Salem Bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, said that the timely intervention of traffic patrols and accident investigation teams secured the spot on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road after which the traffic flow was normalised with support from police to ensure smooth movement while rescue operations were carried out in parallel with diversions made through alternative routes.

Dubai Police Warn Against Sudden Stops

After the crash, Dubai Police had advised motorists not to stop at the middle of the road as this violation is one of the main causes or serious accidents which could lead to fatalities and major injuries.

The force said chassis failures may occur in vehicles because of the following reasons:

Technical faults
Fuel shortages
Tyre damage

And the authorities urged drivers to check their vehicle safety before setting off.

The penalty is a Dh1,000 fine and six black points for stopping in the middle of the road, while obstructing traffic in accordance with Article 98 incurs a Dh500 fine.

Brig Bin Suwaidan recommended that drivers should not hesitate to report immediately to the police if their cars become immobile and pose a danger of blocking traffic on the road.

Here are things drivers involved in breakdowns or accidents should do:

Switch on hazard lights
Ensure passenger safety
Always put a warning triangle behind the vehicle whenever possible
Move away from the roadway
Contact police immediately

This warning has come months after a video that Abu Dhabi Police released in February showing how sudden stops in the middle of the road can result in multiple accidents. In co-operation with the Monitoring and Control Centre, the footage shows vehicles stopping suddenly and drivers behind not managing to stop due to 'inattention or distractions'.

This is also reflected in data by the Ministry of Interior for 2025, which listed tailgating as one of the top four traffic violations responsible for accidents within the UAE. There were 849 accidents connected to the violation over the year.

He was one of 12 people once charged in the crash, which occurred on Jansz's testing ground near Heywood, southwest of Melbourne. For more updates, subscribe to Just Dubai.
