Four years on from the death of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE now continues to celebrate a leader who led an extraordinary journey from the oases of Al Ain to heading up one of the fastest growing countries in history: one which saw stability, generosity and transformative development as hallmarks of his era.
Early Life and Upbringing
Born at Al Muwaiji Fort in Al Ain in 1948, Sheikh Khalifa grew up steeped in the traditions and values of a nation defined by unity, endurance and strength. The eldest son of the Founding Father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan from a young age he traveled with his father throughout the region observing initiatives to unite tribes and uplift peoples wellbeing.
Guided by these formative experiences, a keen sense of responsibility and commitment to public service - often reinforced in daily majlis gatherings that tethered him closely to the people - established early on.
This is educated at Sheikh Zayed-established Al Nahyan School, which comprises formal learning together with relevant training regarding leadership and also government.
Influences That Shaped His Leadership
Inspired by the commitment of his father to stability, unity and welfare, Sheikh Khalifa was also guided by respected family figures including his maternal grandfather Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa and his grandmother Shaikha Salama known for their wisdom and strong character.

He did make a significant move towards publishing a hybrid system of election and appointment for the Federal National Council.
Commitment to Citizens’ Welfare
Sheikh Khalifa's emphasis on the welfare of citizens is one of his longest-lasting legacies. Those orders resulted in thousands of homes being built or renovated, social support and programs to promote Emiratis in work.
Similarly, he proposed steps to lessen the financial burden on citizens by creating funds to assist people unable to pay debts, thus maintaining social stability and dignity.

There was also a commitment to innovation and sustainability in his era. They invested heavily in science, technology and innovation projects while national initiatives such as the Year of Innovation, Year of Reading, Year of Giving and the Year of Tolerance advocated principles that remain at the core foundation of the UAE today.
If early projects such as Masdar City show anything, it is a commitment to clean energy and environmental sustainability.
A Leadership Style Rooted in Humility
Although guiding the country through a time of unprecedented change, Sheikh Khalifa remained a steadying and quiet presence. His proximity to citizens and insistence on understanding their aspirations prevented development from being just ambitious without inclusion.

The United Arab Emirates, or UAE, today being guided by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan is still in the process of building on the rock-solid foundations that were laid during the days of the Sheikh Khalifa era.
Sheikh Khalifa's vision can be seen across all aspects of national life, from modern infrastructure and fast-growing cities to the UAE's place in the world as a force for good.
